MCDN receives over 60 petitions against doctors

Friday Olokor, Abuja

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has received over 60 petitions against doctors in the last one year over alleged inadequate performance, poor attitude to patients and breach of professional ethics, its Registrar and Chief Executive, Dr. Abdulmumin Ibrahim, has stated.

He spoke with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, during the conferment of a fellowship award on him by the National Association of Physicians of Alternative Medicine.

The MCDN also called on the Federal Government to actualise the re-enactment of the Act establishing the Board of the council.

According to him, it has been difficult to carry out investigations and make errant medical professionals to face the disciplinary committee since the board was dissolved.

Ibrahim said, “We have received over 60 complaints which have not been investigated in the last one year. Currently, the council is in abeyance since the Federal Government dissolved all boards of parastatals including the MDCN, which is not even in the constitution.

“The disciplinary committee of the council cannot sit or investigate without a board.

“Currently, we are reviewing the Act. We want the MDCN to continue to be independent so that the council cannot be dissolved by the government because it is made of up professionals and not a set of politicians.”

The MDCN helmsman urged the Federal Government to urgently establish a training institution for the alternative medicine practitioners, saying the council had registered 25 of its members.

Ibrahim lamented that there was no private or government-owned training institution in the country for practitioners of alternative medicine even though they were recognised by the council.

He , however, noted that traditional healers were different from alternative medicine practitioners.
