A youth-focused non-profit organisation, the Umar Nasko Foundation, has inaugurated a contest to spur the production of artificial limbs in Nigeria.

The organisation, in a statement on Monday, said the  Umar Nasko Foundation Prosthetic Challenge  was to encourage the use of locally sourced materials in the design and production of prosthetics.

It said that three semi-finalists would be selected to work with a team of engineers at UX Design, orthopaedics and other world renowned scientists to develop a local solution that would address the high cost of functional prosthetics in the country.

“The winner will also be honoured with the Umar Nasko Prize and Award in the Innovation Category, which carries a crystal trophy, a gold medal, and significant cash compensation,” it stated.
