Governors of the 36 states have pledged their commitment to the State Health Insurance Scheme so as to achieve an efficient primary health care system that will deliver priority health needs to all Nigerians.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, made the pledge on behalf of his colleagues, while reading the  communique of their meeting, held at the Forum Secretariat in Abuja recently.

Yari also disclosed that members of the forum received the briefing on the roadmap to achieving universal health coverage at the sub-national level.

He said, “Governors pledged to maintain the ongoing reforms, including domesticating the State Health Insurance Scheme to achieve strong, efficient and well-run primary health care systems that will deliver priority health needs to all Nigerians through an integrated care.”

Yari said the forum equally pledged to work with the National Assembly to ensure the inclusion of the States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability project in the external borrowing plan to achieve programme effectiveness by September 2018.

He said that the forum also received the briefing by the World Bank Country Director, Dr Rachid Benmessaoud, on the SFTAS Project aimed at strengthening ongoing fiscal reforms at the sub-national level to achieve better public-sector management and fiscal sustainability.

He said, “Governors noted that the effective implementation of the SFTAS project would substantially increase available fiscal resources for productive public spending at the state level in the medium-term.”
